I had read this at least 5 years after the movie had come out, partly because a friend explained to me that the narrator was not, indeed, a person of relatively low intelligence, but actually just someone who was very deliberate and slow. I thought I might give it a chance and I was charmed appropriately. Beyond that, I only really enjoyed the focus on being wise. The story was cutesy to me and didn't have as much ooomph as I'd like, but the characters were well developed even while the story felt a little bit lacking. This is also a review of a book I had read over a decade ago, so please don't shoot me.
